(cont)

For those not so familiar the history of jujutsu, I have provided some commentary.  I hope that it may help to establish a context for the reading of the book.  I have concentrated on the aspect of jujutsu for obvious reasons.  I only briefly mention the first three chapters in the background.  The fourth chapter deals with the topic of Japanese wrestling.  I make some comments about four aspects that arose from this book, that I felt needed some comment.  These comments have been grouped under the following headings:

  • The terminology issue;
  • Publications in existence at the time the book was published;
  • The shift of emphasis to educational and moral imperatives;
  • The position in England at the time of publication.
