Kids self defence

This age group can do a six week course that is run twice yearly, in February and July.  Children can progress through these short courses until the year they turn nine, completing introductory stages and even attempting the first 3 junior jujutsu grades. This will ensure the children remain enthusiastic and motivated until they are old enough to cope with ongoing classes at the age of eight or nine years. Classes last for 45 minutes and are comprised of:

  • falling skills;
  • wrestling games;
  • age appropriate self defence techniques;
  • discussion of how to cope with stranger danger and bullying;
  • each child receives a certificate and takes part in a demonstration on the last day; and
  • all learning is done through games, with an emphasis on fun and safety.

9 - 12 years  Junior Jujutsu Grades

There are five basic mon grades for this age group; they are;

  • 1st Mon   Yellow stripe
  • 2nd Mon  Blue stripe
  • 3rd Mon   Green stripe
  • 4th Mon   Orange stripe
  • 5th Mon   Purple stripe

These grades contain basic jujutsu techniques and principles and are signified by coloured stripes on the white belt, eliminating the need for parents to purchase coloured belts. These lessons are more structured, with mon 1-4 classes lasting for 60 minutes and fifth mon and above doing 1¼ hour classes.

Children who complete these grades before the age of twelve do 2 pencak silat grades and a jujutsu transition grade until they are old enough and strong enough to commence the TJR system, training with other young teenagers. The two junior silat grades introduce children to a different style of martial art with different fighting strategies and more emphasis on striking and kicking.  The jujutsu transition grade has a strength and conditioning component, basic short stick blocking, a range of age appropriate self defence techniques and require a good standard of falling, unbalancing and body movement basics.

Children needing support

Southern Cross Bujutsu teaches self defence to children in Educational Support Units at several private high schools.

These  courses teach body awareness, balance skills, basic easy to use self defence techniques and falling.

In our normal club classes, children can have a carer training with them at no cost to the carer, or we can provide a partner/assistant if needed.

Children with special needs that can benefit from jujutsu training include mild intellectual disabilities, ADHD, some forms of autism, mild cerebral palsy and downs syndrome, and many other conditions.

Special courses are available for students with further needs.

Other types of courses

Falling and body balance skills for football teams.

Many young footballers sustain injuries that can have long term complications or have serious consequences such as head injuries due to falls as a result of tackling or landing from a marking contest.  Knowing how to fall without being injured, being able to go to the ground with confidence can reduce to incidence of injuries and enable the player to quickly regain their balance and make a second effort.
